The characteristics of cycling shorts

Cycling shorts are made of breathable fabrics and of chamois. The chamois, made of foam or gel, avoids friction between the skin and the saddle in addition to absorbing shocks. The type of fabric, the level of aerodynamics, the lightness, the compression and the adhesion are all important elements to consider in the purchase of shorts.

How to choose the right shorts?

To choose the right shorts, you have to wonder what type of bike you are doing. Road bikes, mountain bikes or hybrid bikes Road cycling shorts feature a more padded chamois in the front. This relieves pressure on pubic bones due to the more aggressive position of road cyclists. In other words, chamois shorts for road bikes provide better comfort for the scrotum.

Conversely, those who are more like hybrid bikes and who prefer to ride a bike, will look for a shorts with more foam in the back. Promoting the comfort of the ischions (buttocks) in a more upright position, adopted position on a hybrid bike. Finally, mountain bikers will opt for a shorts style shorts to protect the leg as much as possible from the branches. The chamois meanwhile will be padded months to gain ventilation because their position, less often in contact with the saddle, to jump or overcome obstacles, makes the comfort aspect less necessary.

The length of the distances you are traveling is also worth considering. The longer your outing, the longer your buff must be able to stay firm, and therefore, the better it must be. To have a comfortable chamois, it is important to try the shorts to check the width of the chamois between your legs. Although the sizes of the shorts are usually standard, each of the brands we have in store, such as Mavic, Cannondale, Sugoi, Pearl izumi and RH +, form and integrate their chamois differently.

Once you have chosen the chamois that suits you, it's time to choose the type of fabric for the shorts. All shorts are made of breathable synthetic fabric that expels moisture. We find shorts made of non-compressive, semi-compressive and compressive tissues. The semi-compressive and compressive tissues increase the blood circulation in the legs, thus allowing to better irrigate the muscles and to favor a better supply of oxygen, decreasing the muscular fatigue of the quadriceps, semi-tendinous, semi-membranous and femoral biceps.

We recommend shorts with semi-compressive or compressive fabric for cyclists who do more than 100km per exit. Several factors influence the aerodynamics, the lightness and the breathability of the shorts. The bib's characteristics

The bibs are bibs with straps, with the main advantage of offering extra comfort thanks to their lack of seams at the waist level. This lack of seam eliminates the pressure on the waist that is found with the shorts. The bibs also keep the chamois in place when you get up from your saddle and when you sit down. There are bibs for mountain bike and road bike. The characteristics of the chamois are the same as those of the shorts described above.

The mountain bibs are entirely made of net, except at the level of the genitals, in order to be breathable and compensate for the wearing of mountain shorts. In addition to the two back pockets, several brands including Sombrio mountain bibs with pockets attached only at the top, allowing to place the pockets over your shorts and have access to your water bottle more easily.

The higher the price, the higher the quality of the chamois and the finish of the shorts. New features also appear as a radio pocket and silicone straps on the shoulder straps. It is important to note that when you try your bib, it is normal for the straps to be short when standing: you have to position yourself in the position that you adopt on your bike in order to be able to choose the right size of bib .
